The Village of Glencoe, Illinois

The Village of Glencoe Public Safety Commission is accepting applications for the position of Public Safety Officer, a unique position that is a certified law enforcement officer, firefighter and emergency medical technician. No prior experience or certification is required.

Public Safety Officers are highly unique – as police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians, Glencoe’s officers provide complete public safety services to the Glencoe community. If you become a Public Safety Officer, you will be trained to perform all three job functions.

Starting Salary: $81,715 (effective January 1, 2023); top salary is $120,263 after 7 years
Population:  8,800
Sworn Public Safety Officers:  36 (including one Director, two Deputy Chiefs, seven Lieutenants, and 26 Public Safety Officers)

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the Village of Glencoe: 

  • U.S. citizenship at the time of filing an application;  
  • No felony convictions, pursuant to Illinois state law (Note:  a misdemeanor or felony conviction does not constitute automatic bar to employment.  The nature of the offense, the date of the offense, the surrounding circumstances and the relevance of the offense to the position sought may, however, be considered in assessing qualifications for employment.)
  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license;
  • Minimum of 20 years of age and 6 months by the date of the written examination (April 15, 2023);
  • Under the age of 35 as of the application deadline date (March 31, 2023), unless the applicant meets one of the exceptions listed in Section 4.1(B)(2) of the Glencoe Public Safety Commission's Rules and Regulations or one of the exceptions listed in 65 ILCS 5/10-1-7.1(C).   • Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent;
  • Completion of two years of studies either equaling an Associate's Degree -OR- 60 hours of college credit by June 30, 2023 (from a junior college, college, or university that is accredited by a national accreditation agency);
  • Possess a valid Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) Test Card issued by an agency authorized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board to conduct the POWER Test.
    • POWER test cards must be dated no earlier than six months prior to the date of your application and no later than April 30, 2023.  All applicants must obtain a POWER test card by April 30, 2023 to continue eligibility in the examination process.

    • Note: CPAT cards are NOT accepted, only the POWER test card is accepted.  If you have a CPAT card, you will need to take the POWER test.
 
Submission of Application:

Applications must be submitted online by Friday, March 31, 2023 at 4:00 PM (CST). Faxed, e-mailed, mailed or hand-delivered applications will NOT be accepted.  Only one application per person, per testing cycle will be accepted. Please note that technical support for application submittal is only available during Stanard & Associates' normal business hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

 

Mandatory Written Examination

Following completion of all application materials and review of minimum eligibility requirements, eligible applicants will be invited to complete the online written examination. All applicants will receive an email from Stanard & Associates approximately one week prior to the written examination regarding their eligibility to take the written examination.

The written exam will only be offered online, on April 15, 2023 at 9:00 AM. No make-up dates or times will be offered.

To take the online written examination, you must use a computer (or laptop) with internet connection. You cannot take the written exam on a smart phone or tablet. If you do not have access to a computer and internet, you may request use of a Village of Glencoe computer and internet for the written exam. All requests for use of a Village of Glencoe computer and internet must be sent to Assistant Village Manager Sharon Tanner (stanner@villageofglencoe.org or 847-461-1103) no later than Monday, April 10, 2023. If you do not request use of a Village computer and internet by April 10, 2023, you will not be provided one to use.

 

Important Information for Applicants

All applicants must submit the following documents as part of your application. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the examination process. 

  • Copy of birth certificate;
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or naturalization;
  • Copy of high school diploma or G.E.D.;
  • Copy of college transcripts and diploma (if applicable) – unofficial transcripts may be submitted with your application if they include your name, the name of the college or university and identify all credit hours and grades earned (official transcripts may be required by the Village at a later stage in the hiring process);
  • Copy of POWER test card issued no earlier than 6 months prior to the date of your application, or statement that you will complete the POWER test by April 30, 2023;
  • Copy of military service record, discharge and DD-214 (if applicable)
