The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office Merit Commission is accepting applications for the position of Correctional Officer with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.
Starting Salary: $58,050.72
Sworn Personnel: 16
All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the Grundy County Merit Commission:
- U.S. citizenship;
- No felony convictions
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent;
- Valid driver's license;
- Minimum of 18 years of age as of date of hire, but may apply at age 17;
- Must pass the Illinois P.O.W.E.R. test (this Pre-Employment Condition is not required at the time of application);
- Must take an on-line written examination between Tuesday, February 4, 2025 and Thursday, February 6, 2025. (More information concerning the written exam is located under the "Summary of the Hiring Process" section of this application);
- Pay a $45.00 non-refundable application processing fee.
Submission of Application
- Applications must be submitted online by Tuesday, January 21, 2025 @ 4:00 PM (CST). Faxed, e-mailed, mailed or dropped off applications will NOT be accepted.
- Applications submitted after the deadline will NOT be accepted. Only one application per person, per testing cycle will be accepted.
- Previous Grundy County Sheriff’s Office applicants are eligible to re-apply.
Documents Required for Application Submission
- Copy of valid driver's license;
- Copy of birth certificate;
- Copy of High school diploma or GED equivalent (If unable to provide a diploma, obtain a letter of certification from the school);
- Copy of social security card;
- If the candidate possesses a College or University degree, submit a copy of the degree and/or transcripts (a certified copy is required if to be used for Preference Points)
- If the candidate has military experience, a copy of Form DD-214 is required.
PREFERENCE POINTS CONSIDERATION

In accordance to 55 ILCS Sheriff's Merit System Section 3-8010 "Certification of Applicants", up to 5 preference points, if approved by the commission, may be awarded to their final score in the following areas. Consideration of preference points by the commission will be the sole responsibility of the applicant and must be made in writing prior to the posting of the Preliminary Eligibility List.
1.) MILITARY SERVICE
Those applicants for appointment as a Deputy Sheriff and/or Correctional Officer to the Grundy County Sheriff's Office who have honorably served in the military service of the United States shall file with their Supplementary Employment Questionnaire, a sworn or certified copy of their Certificate of Honorable Service in a branch of the United States Military, or such other evidence as they may have of honorable service in or honorable discharge from, any branch of the United States Military. If qualified and duly requested by the applicant, a candidate may be awarded 1.25 points for each year of active military service not to exceed 4 years or 5 points. Any candidate serving 12 months in a recognized zone may be awarded 5 preference points.
2.) EDUCATIONAL
Those applicants for appointment as a Deputy Sheriff and/or Correctional Officer to the Grundy County Sheriff's Office who have obtained a college degree shall file with their Supplementary Employment Questionnaire, a certified copy of their college transcripts. If qualified and duly requested by the applicant; a candidate may be awarded 3 points for an Associate Degree and 5 points for any college degree, Bachelor's or higher, from a regionally accredited institution. (NOTE: The official certified transcripts, which are required for education Preference Points, must be provided by the college directly to the Merit Commission. 3.) LAW ENFORCEMENT or CORRECTIONAL OFFICER
Those applicants for appointment as a Deputy Sheriff and/or Correctional Officer to the Grundy County Sheriff's Office who have prior law enforcement or correctional officer experience, shall file with their Supplementary Employment Questionnaire, a certified letter of their experience. If qualified and duly requested by the applicant, a candidate may be awarded 5 preference points for prior experience.
4.) GRUNDY EXPLORERS
The Merit Commission may award preference points to Explorers in the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program. An applicant may receive ½ point per year – up to 2 points for participation in the program.
